Why can’t I start up in Mac OS 9?

February 13, 2006

Newer Macintosh computers cannot start up in Mac OS 9. Check Startup Disk preferences to see which startup systems are currently available on your computer.

To see your available startup systems:
Open System Preferences and click Startup Disk.
If you see only Mac OS X systems, your computer may not support starting up in Mac OS 9. If you were previously able to start up in Mac OS 9, your Mac OS 9 System Folder may be damaged. Use the system discs that came with your computer to reinstall Mac OS 9.

Although starting up in Mac OS 9 is no longer supported on newer Macintoshes, you can run Mac OS 9 applications using the Classic environment. To start the Classic environment, open System Preferences, click Classic, click Start/Stop, and then click Start. If no volume with Mac OS 9 is available to start Classic, install Mac OS 9 using the system discs that came with your computer.
