Should Apple offer an unlocked iPhone?
January 12, 2007
With this weeks announcement of the iPhone at Macworld 07, Cingular users had a real reason to celebrate. But what about the rest of us who are not on the Cingular network?

Got something to say?

They should release it for the big 3 carriers in order to get the biggest market for the iPhone.
If Mac decides not to release an unlocked version, they’re cutting themselves completely out of the European marketplace, not to mention Australia and India. Even if they don’t offer one stateside,…once they’re available overseas, it will make not offering a stateside version a loss of easy profits. (Not that Mac hasn’t dropped the ball before.)
The first thing I thought when Apple released the iPhone was that it would be an unlocked phone. How great would it be to go into an Apple store and purchase an unlocked iPhone that you could use on any carrier. Just think of how many phones they would sell!
It sux that iPhone is locked at least for now. However apple will release it by June so there is still hope that they do something about this. If not we will have to pay hackers for unlocking them. Or just wait till apple releases iPhone to European market and I am sure it will come out unlocked. Locked phone market doesn’t work in Europe, so yeah in Europe it will be unlocked for sure..
It would seem like they’re cutting their own business by limiting themselves to only Cingular, but you have to think about the fact that Cingular probably paid MAC quite a large amount to be exclusive.
