Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Luke Doucet has been on our radar for a while now thanks to his gritty mixture of slashing guitar twang and a complete love of pop purity. His newest album Bloods to Rich shows his influences with one song lamenting the death of the Band’s Rick Danko while another is a jaunty reworking of the Cure’s “The Lovecats.” This tune, “First Day in the New Hometown” is a crackling mixture of jangling pop and roots-rock crunch.

This weeks free iTunes download is: Luke Doucet & The White Falcon, First Day (In the New Hometown)

Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Young Galaxy is indie-pop duo Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless. Working within that section of indie pop which finds hope in spaced-out sounds, cosmic synths, droning guitar buzz, and sweetly arranged vocals, Young Galaxy put out an olive branch to the skies, and make being earth-bound seem completely lackluster.

Matt Costa is a singer/songwriter from Southern California whose Songs We Sing brought him much acclaim for his gentle, hummable style. Opening for acts like Jack Johnson and Gomez opened up Costa’s fan base and “Mr. Pitiful” is the first track from his eagerly awaited new album. The tune is a jaunty bit of piano pop with Costa dropping great lyrical witticisms.

Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our iTunes Free Download of the Week. Nicole Atkins has said in interviews that there is a specific sound she’s aiming for in her music. “I want to sound like a girl group in a David Lynch movie” were the words she used and we really can’t come up with a better description than that. Atkins belts out this tune from her full-length debut like a mixture of Ronnie Spector and Loretta Lynn, but the arrangements are nothing but grandiose and colored by noir-ish black and whites. Bells ring, strings sing, and the distant twang of a guitar calls out. But Atkins is the guiding light here. Roy Orbison would be proud.

It’s been a solid six years since we last had a full-length from Bran Van 3000, the Montreal-based soul/party/hip-hop/funk collective. Now the floodgates open with the group’s third album, Rosé. We’ve got a track for you as our free Single of the Week and we’ve picked a good one. “Forever” is future funk and freestyle electro-pop rolled into something bite-sized. Flooded by laser synths and meaty funk rhythms, this tune will keep you occupied for the next six minutes. Make some time for it.

Think you’ve got all the dreamy Icelandic indie rock in your life that you can handle? Think again! Amiina are an Icelandic quartet who have recorded with Sigur Ros. Ostensibly, they are a string quartet, but there are a variety of tape manipulations, guitar, and assorted loops to make you think more of mixtapes than music halls.

Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. This number from Ridley Bent is a country swing cut that could have rolled out of Bakersfield years ago, if not for the lyrics. Within this expertly played cut, Ridley Bent tells the story of a girl he met in a record shop, they get together, they break up, their records get mixed up by mistake. Now, “she’s got my Tom T. Hall, I’ve got her Hüsker Dü”, “she’s got my ‘Nine Pound Hammer’ and I’ve got her Nine Inch Nails.” Clever, fun, and a great tune worth enjoying for both hardcore country fans and for alt and rock fans who will dig the constant namechecking.
